What is Counselling?
According to the American Counselling Association, “Counseling is a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals.”
Contrary to popular belief, Counsellors do not offer ‘advice’, they just create a comfortable and friendly space for interaction where individuals can unburden and openly talk about their feelings, troubles, and worries. The counselor listens and offers insights from what the client shares and attempts to empathize with the client’s emotions. Through this process the counselor offers suggestions.
But the essential point to highlight here is that counseling involves giving suggestions, insights, and necessary information but it does not mean imposing judgment and personal bias on clients. It is always about empathy, understanding, and healthy emotional expression.
What is Career Counselling?
It is rightly said that “To find one’s passion is to find one’s true purpose in life”. A career is something integral for any individual to sustain and grow. But more than that, one’s career is also an essential component of a person’s identity, it is rooted in the core idea of who you are. Sometimes in the drive of time and urgency, individuals choose occupations that are not well suited to their personality, skills, and strengths which, can result in stress, confusion, and lack of vision and motivation towards the future. The way out of this fix is and also to avoid this fix, is to seek career counseling. Any individual at any age and stage of his/her/their career can seek career counseling.
Career Counselling and career assessment aim at helping people maximize their potentials and know where their true passion and area of expertise lies. Career Assessment is an essential part of this process, where a simple test helps you in understanding your interests, strengths, weaknesses, work style, communication style and personality traits which are then aligned to industries and workplaces that can best utilize those skills and constitute an ecosystem where you can grow and be the best!
- One’s profession is an integral component of one’s identity. When you question yourself ‘Who am I?’, one of the immediate responses is ‘I am a/an (your occupation)’.
- Hence, it is very essential to understand your abilities, beliefs, and interests before choosing a career path. Along with income and salary, it is important to analyze the skills and nature of work that a profession demands and whether our interests align with them. One’s occupation is what an individual dedicates mental and physical labor to, for 6 to 10 hours, 5 to 6 days a week and if there is lack of interest and motivation in pursuing the work that the profession demands, it can lead to increased levels of exhaustion, stress, and anxiety.
- Working in a fulfilling career can dramatically increase happiness, self-confidence, and productivity, and consequently, improve performance.
- Last but not the least, fulfilling careers add a sense of purpose and hope in the lives of individuals and flow into their relationships and family life to make them abundant too.
Overall, our counselors believe that counseling is a win-win process where growth and learning happen through open interactions in a safe, non-judgmental, and warm environment. Counseling is a simple process of unburdening, de-stressing, and strengthening your abilities to be independent and successful. We are always here to listen and help, so let’s get talking!
